The archives include a collection
of artifacts, paintings, sculpture and research materials of famous African-Americans from

Burr Oak Woods

Located in Blue Springs just 18
miles east of Kansas City. The forest is composed of 1066 acres of woodlands, fields and
ponds. Natural features include: 33 acres of natural area, scattered limestone boulders,

Center

Charlie Parker Memorial
Foundation
This foundation is dedicated to
Kansas City native son Charlie "Bird" Parker and other jazz greats. In addition
to classes and workshops in instrumental music, demonstrations and performances are also
presented. The foundation has established the international Jazz Hall of Fame project,

Civil War Museum of Lone

Ethnic Festivals
Kansas City boasts many festivals
from several ethnic groups. The Ethnic Enrichment Festival in August, The Greek Festival
in September, La Fiesta Italiana in October, and La Fiesta Mexicana all have fabulous food
and dance. Perhaps the best known is the Renaissance Festival held annually in the fall.

flavor of our regional history, you almost feel as if you have been transported back to
the days of Indians, traders, trappers, and trading posts! The Kansas City Museum
Planetarium is located behind the museum.
Liberty Memorial
Gorgeous view of our fair city from
the top of the largest monument in the area. It was built in the memory of American
servicemen who fought in World War I.
Music In The Park
Brush Creek on the Plaza sets the scene for
free concerts given during the summer months. Thousands of listeners picnic on the banks
and enjoy the music. The Lettermen, Chuck Mangione, Herbie Mann and Sister Sledge area
among the stars who have performed here.
Nelson Atkins Museum of Art
With many amenities to offer,
including an Oriental Art exhibit unsurpassed in the country, this gallery also boasts an
unforgettable dining area in Rozzelle Court, mid-afternoon concerts, classic films and
lectures. Located just east of the Country Club Plaza.
Plaza Art Fair
In late September, the streets of
the Plaza are blocked off and transformed into an outdoor art fair when over 150
nationally selected artists get a chance to display their works, including jewelry, glass,
pottery, sculpture and paintings. U.M.K.C. Conservatory of Music supplies the
entertainment. Billed as one of the top art fairs in the country, this one is not to be
missed.
Plaza Lights
Nothing can top the elegance of
this Spanish styled shopping area, especially during the Christmas season. The Plaza
Lights turn on their charm during this special time of year. Thousands come down to watch
the "lighting" ceremony which takes place each Thanksgiving night. (816)

Shawnee Indian Mission
State Historic Site
This mission was one of the
earliest in the area, established in 1839 to educate Native American children. The school

Spirit Festival
This crowd-pleasing event takes
place at the Allis Plaza during Labor Day weekend. Thousands gather here for food,

Theater Under The Stars
Starry summer nights glitter even
more when you lounge in your seat (brought from home!) and watch the terrific plays staged
at Penn Valley Community College, or in Johnson County at Shawnee Mission Park through the
Parks and Recreation Program. Professional theater and concerts can also be found at
Starlight Theater or Sandstone.
Union Cemetery
This historic cemetery is the
resting place of Alexander Majors, artist George Caleb Bingham and more than 1,000 Civil

This is the world headquarters of
